Today was Kyleigh's big day at the hospital for testing. At the end of December, she had very high fever without any other symptoms which resulted in a trip to ER and diagnoses of urinary tract infection. Since she is very young to be having UTI, her pediatrician felt it necessary to have further tests done to check for an anatomical problem, kidney damage, etc. So today we checked in at OSF at 8am and she had her kidney ultrasound first. That took about 45 minutes and was a constant fighting her, it took both Chad and I to hold her down. So far, no results yet on what that showed. Next was the VCUG - voiding cystogram where they catheterized her and xray'd to watch the flow of her urine. The radiologist found reflux into her left kidney at a grade 2. The reflux is graded from 0 to 5 (0 is no reflux which is what we want, 5 being worst). Grades 1 and 2 have 80% rate of healing on their own with out surgery. I must admit, I was suprised. As a parent you are always in denial that there can be a problem with your child so I fully expected that we would find she is completely normal but was constantly worrying and was glad we were having the testing to reassure me. This result probably explains her irritability and restlessness at nights often, she may have a constant low infection that we don't know if no fever. Although a grade 2 is nothing for fear of right now, we are being referred to a specialist in pediatric urology next. It's a highly debatable topic on treatment says our pediatrician, but the Peoria specialist does do daily antibiotic for prevention of infection. I'm not a fan of antibiotics when not necessary, but will do what dr says..... I've read that you can be on the antibiotic for a year, and up to 5 years. I suppose depends on the case and how soon it all resolves. I think she will have urinalysis every 6 months, and the radiology every year. Now I am just worried of some minor kidney damage since she had high fever for ~4 days before antibiotic the first time.....still waiting on the ultrasound results and lab results but will keep you updated! My Kyleigh is such a fighter and trooper though, strong little girl. She wore herself out and has been napping most of the afternoon. Here is a pic of her in her hospital gown waiting.
Awww, bless her little heart! I can't stand when the babies are in the hospital... Ugh, it's never fun :/ Glad they are keeping an eye on things, and they didn't find anything drastic!!!!! ~ Nelena
